Musings on Immigration

ICE, la agencia encargada de enforzar nuestra leyes inmigratorias, ha empezado una serie de redadas en los estados de Carolina del Norte, Texas, y Georgia, para deportar a personas (incluyendo madres e hijos menores) que, entre otras cosas, hayan entrado indocumentadamente al país después de Enero 1, 2014 o que tengan orden de deportación con fecha después de Enero 1, 2014. Hemos escuchado (de clientes y amigos) que niños pequeños y madres han sido detenidos y puestos en centros de detención para ser deportados lo más pronto posible. Muchos--sino casi todos--de las personas que están siendo detenidas son centroamericanos que huyeron de sus países empezando en el 2014 debido a la violencia que allá se vive y que viene de drogas, de pandillas como el MS-13, y la inhabilidad de la policía local de parar estas amenazas. Estos inmigrantes han decidido huir a los Estados Unidos buscando refugio, no porque sean criminales, pero porque se han convertido en refugiados que huyen de sus país...

Throughout the course of the Bush Administration we heard numerous horror stories that managed to escape from the walls of America’s detention centers about the mistreatment of immigrant detainees. There were accounts of immigrants who had been abused by guards, asylees who had been detained despite being granted status, mothers who were not allowed access to breast pumps, children who were held behind razor wire, women giving birth while chained to a bed, sick men being denied any sort of medical examination or treatment for pain relief, people misdiagnosed as psychotic or even drugged to facilitate their transfer. The list goes on and on. In fact, from January of 2004 through April of 2008, over 70 immigrants died while in detention, the vast majority due to limited or no access to health care, or just falling through the cracks of the system.
